A viscosity index improver is usually an oil-soluble polymer compound that is generally rubbery or solid at room temperature. For ease of use, it is usually diluted with 150SN or 100SN neutral oil to a 5% to 10% concentrate. The multi-grade oil with added viscosity index improver has a higher viscosity index and a smoother viscosity-temperature curve than a single-grade oil of the same viscosity. The reason why this type of polymer compound can play such a role is that the general view is that the polymer coil of the viscosity index improver stretches at high temperature and shrinks at low temperature. The change in the shape of the coil makes the viscosity increasing ability at high temperature large and the viscosity increasing ability small at low temperature, thus improving the viscosity-temperature performance of lubricating oil.
Viscosity index improvers are based on having different forms at different temperatures and having different effects on viscosity to increase oil viscosity and improve viscosity-temperature performance. The thickened internal combustion engine oil, hydraulic oil, gear oil, etc. prepared with viscosity index improver have good viscosity-temperature performance, smooth viscosity-temperature curve, and can meet the requirements of multiple viscosity grades at the same time.
